A team of researchers at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) assessed the experimental drug in a 12-week clinical trial. It comprised of 144 adults who were suffering from AUD. Participants included both men and women who were randomly selected to receive either the experimental drug or a placebo pill. The experiment measured the number of heavy drinking days after the new drug usage. The research concluded that the overall percentage of heavy drinking days was lower in participants who took ABT-436 as compared to participants who received a placebo pill. The experiment also found that ABT-436 was more effective in diminishing drinking habit in people with higher levels of stress. The study concluded that out of the total number of participants, those who were administered the drug, ABT-436, had more days without drinking than those who did not take the new drug.
The drug also showed positive results in people who were addicted to smoking. Smokers who received ABT-436, smoked significantly fewer cigarettes in a week as compared to their counterparts who received a placebo pill.
